Moving in Winter Weather: A comprehensive guide
Unfortunately when planning a moving date, you can’t always choose a beautiful day to make your big transition. In fact, you probably can’t even forecast the weather if you’re preparing well in advance.
As the winter approaches, moving during snowstorms, cold rainy days, and suboptimal conditions will become inevitable. If you’re wondering how to navigate a wet move in day, you’ve come to the right place.
Today, our team has put together a list of tips and best practices that we use to protect our clients and their property during snowy and rainy days.
Tip No. 1: Use floor coverings
The last thing you want on a wet day is to track all of the mud, dirt, moisture, and in some cases, salt used to melt snow, into your house.
Our crew always uses anti-slip floor coverings by your home’s entrance. Our floor coverings hold their spot on your floor and carpet, while also absorbing any outside dirt or grime.
This will not only keep your new home clean, but protect your floor and furniture and objects move in and out. This will also prevent pets and infants from potentially growing ill due to eating any type of outside chemical or bacteria that may be tracked into your home.
Tip No. 2: Wrap your furniture with plastic wrap in addition to blankets
Whether we’re moving customers in rain, snow, or good weather, we always wrap our furniture in blankets and plastic wrap. We strongly recommend you do the same if moving yourself or using another team to move your furniture.
Not only will wrapping protect your furniture and walls from damage, but it will keep your items dry during rain or snow.
When wrapping, it’s important to ensure that not only the top and sides of your furniture are covered, but also the bottom and corners, which will prevent the bottom from getting damaged or wet when sitting in the truck.
Tip No. 3: Time the transportation of items prone to water damage
If rain or snow are falling hard on your move day, prioritize packing boxes and wrapping furniture until the madness dies down.
In any storm, there will be pockets of intense weather. Always work to avoid these pockets of intensity and you should be in good shape.
Tip No. 4: Keep the truck dry
Before your move starts, place a piece of cardboard or a floor covering at the entrance of your truck for your team of movers to wipe their feet off as they enter.
Throughout your move, keep a few dry blankets and regularly wipe off the floor and any wet plastic wrap on your furniture.
This will not only protect your furniture, but also provide a safeguard against getting all of the mud, dirt, moisture, and snow salt in your new home on the unload.
Our team has implemented these procedures as a company standard to ensure the safety of all furniture we transport.
Tip No. 5: Avoid heavy snow without 4WD
While this last tip may be considered common sense by some, box trucks and very “boxy” vehicles tend to tip over easily.
If moving on a day with inclement weather, always prioritize the safety of your family and your items. Remember, if your truck tips over and your items all break, it’s going to cost you way more than the potential stress of delaying the move.
By following these tips, you can protect your family and your hard earned property on any day of the year.
