Office Moves: 3 Key Insights

In the post pandemic world, companies are ditching their old office spaces for virtual and hybrid work arrangements that have triggered companies to either discontinue their leases altogether or downsize to a more appropriate space for the size of the company. In areas like downtown Bethesda and Washington D.C., our team has been receiving an influx of office move requests and clean outs to either discontinue in person arrangements or downsize office spaces.

If you find yourself in this position and you're also a busy D.C. area business owner, don’t worry - we’ve listed 3 tips for you to ensure your office move runs smoothly.

Tip No. 1: Pack monitors carefully.

One very fragile and most commonly packed item in today’s offices are computer monitors. Whether you use docking stations, personal computers, or even flat screen monitors for conferences, be sure that your moving company of choice boxes everything with the proper packing materials. Additionally, we highly recommend that you request your mover to pack the boxes in a secure spot on the truck.

In the case that your selected moving company is not careful with your monitors, it’s likely that the monitor screens get damaged and may fail to operate upon arrival. Unfortunately monitors tend to be very fragile and treating them with proper care is essential.

Tip No. 2: Prioritize organization and packaging options for your portfolio of sensitive data warehousing hardware

Data storage is key to your business. The hardware protecting and hosting your data must be moved with care. You spent hours transferring data assets onto your hardware systems and developing the cyber security controls to ensure protection, processes you’d need to start from scratch if the storage hardware was harmed in a move.

To a careless moving company, your hardware systems and their sensitivity might get overlooked. Prioritizing which pieces are of the highest priority, and informing a trusted moving supervisor is critical to a successful move. The right moving company will run you through a variety of packaging options, serving as your partner in selecting the right option for you.

Tip No. 3: Reserve the loading dock and elevator well in advance.

One common logistical pitfall of both office moves and residential apartment moves is failure to reserve the elevator and loading dock with the building in advance. If you wait too long or fail to reserve the elevator and/or dock altogether, your building may refuse to allow your  movers to transport the items.

Not to mention, failure to reserve the elevator and loading dock will result in wasted time and potentially even additional fees from your mover.
