Transporting Pets: 5 Tips for a smooth move day

Everybody knows that moving homes is very stressful for humans, but what about our pets?

When it comes to moving homes with pets, your pets are unlikely to understand what’s going on. In turn, they may experience anxiety and have trouble coping with a change in their living space. If not managed and cared for properly, your pets can potentially suffer from high levels of stress and discomfort throughout your move, or even health issues.

Today, our expert team will share some tips from our 2,300+ successful moves to keep your pets healthy and relaxed throughout your move.

Tip 1: Make a safe space.

As you or your hired movers wrap furniture, pack boxes, and move items, there will be a lot of chaos. Not only will it potentially be loud, but their favorite furniture and normal surroundings will dramatically change.

Additionally, they may be quickly introduced to a lot of new people in their home, which has the potential to cause anxiety.

MoCo Moving recommends placing your pet in a quiet, familiar room away from the action. If possible, keeping your pet outside in your backyard is typically the best option.

Tip 2: Pack a pet essentials box.

Similarly to the “essentials” box our team has recommended in previous articles and social media posts for you, we also highly recommend packing an essentials box for each individual pet.

An essentials box should contain familiar toys, medications, food, accessories (e.g., collars, bowls, and leashes for a dog), and anything that your pet will need throughout the trip or upon arrival.

When this box is packed, you can label it and leave it with our team - we’ll ensure it’s in an accessible location on our truck.

Tip 3: Keep your routine and schedule the same.

Throughout your move, ensure that your pet is eating, walking, and sleeping on their normal schedule.

If making an extended trip, build in time for regular stops to ensure that your pet can get some fresh air and use the bathroom.

In addition, be sure to take frequent breaks to let your pet outside and show them love during the packing and unpacking processes.

Tip 4: Prioritize comfort in transit.

Especially if you’re traveling far, take the time to ensure that there is adequate space and a comfortable area for your pet within your vehicle.

An uncomfortable furry friend for hours on end tends to lead to a lot of unwanted whining and barking, which can add unnecessary stress to moving.

In the case of an unfortunate event, not properly positioning your pet in the vehicle may place them at risk of injury as well.

Tip 5: See your new Vet.

Scout a reputable Veterinarian in advance and make an appointment to take your pet in for a visit after you are settled into your new home. This will not only aid your pet in familiarity with their new caregiver, but also aid you in finding a trusted source to visit if an emergency were to arise with your pet.

If moving away from your old vet, this tip can provide a serious ease of mind to pet owners.

All in all, moving can be difficult and stressful, especially when moving with pets. However, if you choose to hire a high quality moving company and take these precautions, you can make your move day significantly smoother.
