Tips for Packing Your Move
If you’re getting ready to move, it’s likely that you are about to begin the most tedious part, which is packing boxes. While packing boxes is tedious, it is important to pack your boxes particularly and carefully prior to the start of your move.
If you fail to do this, your hard earned items are at a risk of breaking or getting damaged in transit. In addition to this issue, unloading your boxes at the end of the move will be a mess. Our team knows the importance of this process and packs boxes professionally, so we’ve put together a few tips to help you along the way.
1. Stay Organized
When packing for a move, you will be required to move everything out of your furniture’s drawers and into boxes. In order to stay organized, we highly recommend using labels, color codes, or writing to distinguish boxes.
Utilize labels to assign these boxes to specific rooms of your home. This will not only save you time figuring out what is what, but allow you to direct your movers to where you would like your boxes & save your back.
If you’re truly an organized all-star and really want to get specific with it, you can even label the specific drawer or piece of furniture that each box goes in.
2. Don’t Overpack Boxes
A common mistake that people make is overpacking boxes, particularly with items like books. When packing boxes, items should fit snug, have adequate protection, and also be fairly low in weight.
If boxes are overpacked and become too heavy, they are at risk of breaking or falling apart, leaving your items at increased risk of damage. In addition to this, think about packing your moving truck like a game of Tetris. Like the game of Tetris, in order to safely transport your boxes and furniture, we want them to be as compact as possible, which will minimize any unsafe movement in transit.
All boxes have a uniform size and shape, which in turn leads to a snug fit and safe transit to your new home. When boxes are overpacked, they quickly lose their shape, which will increase the risk of unsafe movement during transit.
3. Always Protect Items & Tape Boxes
When moving items, always use more than enough tape to keep the top and bottom safely shut. Particularly when moving delicates, you must also use protective material.
Always adequately cushion delicate items with paper, bubble wrap, and/or packing peanuts. In addition to cushioning the delicate items, make sure they fit snug. Similarly to packing the truck, we in general think about packing boxes as a game of Tetris as well. You can use any type of packing material to fill gaps, as long as it is soft and adequately clean for your items to be placed in.
Keep in mind, when moving frames, monitors, mirrors, or flat shaped items, you will need special boxes & materials. These materials can be purchased at U-Haul, Home Depot, Amazon, or your moving/shipping supply store of choice.
Newspaper, towels, clothes, and balled up plastic bags also work great for protective material if you’re moving on a budget!
