Getting Ready to Donate Furniture? Here’s What You Should Know.
When choosing to get rid of furniture, donating and recycling are two environmentally friendly options that allow you to reduce your impact on the environment. If you are donating furniture, you also specifically have the option to make an impact on your community as well. Not to mention, the furniture donation also comes with a tax write off.
Luckily, our team donates and recycles every piece of furniture we can by default. We do this not only to reduce our impact on the environment, but to help some great organizations.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a company for donation:
1. How They Pack The Truck
If the company you choose does not carefully pack items into the truck, the odds of the items getting damaged during transit is very high.
As a result the donation center will not accept your items in a damaged condition. Avoid this common pitfall by being transparent with your vendor prior to the donation.
We recommend asking for photos of prior jobs, how they pack the truck, and what type of truck they intend on using for your job.
2. Which Charities & Non-Profits They Use
When making a donation, it is important to be aware that not all organizations receiving your donation are the same. Some organizations accepting donations not officially registered as 501(c)(3) Non-Profits, leaving you without the possibility of a tax write off. In addition to this, the charity your furniture is being donated to may not support your values. Certain organizations will support certain causes and we believe this can be a meaningful part of the process.
Always ask your mover which organization they intend to donate to. With MoCo Moving, you have the option to choose your own organization to donate to if you wish.
We proudly partner with a Wider Circle in Silver Spring, MD for our donations by default. If you have a different preference when working with us, ask your estimator and we are glad to accommodate you.
3. Can It Be Donated?
It is important to be aware that some items may not be acceptable for donation in the first place. Any type of damaged, stained or excessively dirty furniture is unacceptable from donation centers.
In addition, donation centers only accept certain types of items. They will not accept everything and it is important to ask your estimator if the items are able to be donated, regardless of condition.
Here at MoCo Moving, we have a well developed knowledge of what is acceptable and what is not due to our extensive experience & expertise.
On the estimate, our estimators are able to take photos of questionable items and confirm their eligibility for donation in advance. We contact your organization of choice directly and sort out logistics beforehand.
