What is Moving Valuation?

Moving Valuation is the way that moving companies valuate and insure the value of your furniture. The valuation accounts for lost, damaged or destroyed items.

When moving furniture, accidents are possible and can lead to potential furniture and property damages. Moving companies use valuation to create an agreement with you about what happens in the case of your items being lost, damaged or destroyed. Today, we will go over the most common types of moving valuation.

Released Valuation

Released valuation is free as apart of all standard moving quotes from “the other guys” or most moving companies. If you don’t pay extra for insurance or don’t hear it mentioned, you can expect to receive this level of coverage.

At released valuation, items are valuated at 60 cents per pound per article. This means that if your movers break or damage your mother’s $3,000.00 armoire and it weighs 300 pounds, you will only receive $180.00 back.

Commonly, companies will charge low prices and sneak this agreement onto customers who assume their items are fully protected.

“Full Replacement” Value

While this valuation is better for replacing the value of your furniture, beware of the word “full”.

Many companies will tell customers that they are receiving full replacement value and sell this insurance plan as something it is not.

Full valuation is based on a value of your goods at $6.00 per pound per article and a minimum shipment value of $6,000.00. The weight of your shipment is multiplied by $6.00 to determine the carrier’s maximum liability in the event of loss or damage.

So once again, for example, This means that if your movers break or damage your mother’s $3,000.00 armoire and it weights 300 pounds, you will only receive $1,800.00 back.

For a better example, a $800.00 4k TV that breaks and weighs 30 pounds, would only yield you $180.00 in the case of damages.

While this coverage is better than released valuation, it is far from a true “full” coverage for valuable items. We recommend that you request your mover be extremely transparent and upfront about valuation coverage.

Declared Value

If you have items of very high value, you have the option to negotiate a declared coverage value with the moving service you choose to use.

During the estimation process, you are able to delegate a certain dollar value coverage for your move and certain individual items. We highly recommend mentioning this upfront, regardless of your mover.
